Jan 18 Screening of "War Made Easy"
Sussex County’s Northwest New Jersey Peace Fellowship will host a viewing of the film "War Made Easy" - How Presidents and Pundits Keep Spinning Us to Death, Friday, January 18, 2008 from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm at the Sparta United Methodist Church (71 Sparta Avenue, Sparta, NJ). "War Made Easy", a recent film by the Media Education Foundation, is an insightful analysis of how governments bent on war making have relied on propaganda techniques to overcome resistance at home and disapproval abroad. Looking closely at the spin strategies employed by today’s pundits and public officials to build support for the invasion of Iraq, the film finds striking parallels to the information wars waged by earlier administrations, both Democratic and Republican.
"War Made Easy" also provides evidence of the media’s complicity in promoting government agendas for war. Moving from Vietnam to Iraq, the film examines how news reports have become nearly indistinguishable from White House and Pentagon talking points, a problem that has become exacerbated by journalists who have grown accustomed to being fed information by official sources.

May 28 Memorial Day Reading of Names
An exhibit entitled Eyes Wide Open: New Jersey will be on display on the library lawn in Sparta on Memorial Day. The Northwest NJ Peace Fellowship, New Jersey Peace Action, the Social Action Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Sussex County, and the Church and Society Committee of the Sparta United Methodist Church are co-sponsoring the event to honor the fallen in the Iraq War. The exhibit, along with the reading of the names of U.S. troops who have died in the war, will be held on the lawn of the Sparta Public Library, 22 Woodport Road, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Monday, May 28.
The impact of the Iraq War on the state of New Jersey is the special focus of Eyes Wide Open: New Jersey. The exhibit features over 57 pairs of combat boots, tagged with the names of New Jersey soldiers who have died in the Iraq War, and 50 pairs of civilian shoes to represent the thousands of Iraqi civilian casualties.
Members of the public will read the name, rank, and hometown of the more than 3,400 brave American soldiers who have lost their lives in the Iraq War. There will also be a reading of names of a small fraction of the thousands of Iraqi civilians who have died in the war.
Eyes Wide Open: New Jersey is on loan from the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), an international social justice organization. AFSC originally created Eyes Wide Open: The Human Cost of War to illustrate the lives lost in the war in Iraq. That exhibit now includes more than 2,709 pairs of boots representing U.S. military casualties, along with 3,000 pairs of shoes memorializing the many thousands of Iraqi civilians who have been killed in the conflict. The national exhibit, which first opened in Chicago with 500 pairs of boots in January 2004, has been displayed in over 70 cities across the country, and continues to grow as the death toll rises.
Monday’s Eyes Wide Open: New Jersey exhibit is free and open to the public, although donations will be accepted. Further details of the exhibit can be found at http://www.afsc.org/nymetro/.

January 12 Film Presentation - The Road to Guantánamo
Under the guise of protecting national security, the Bush Administration is systematically expanding its power to violate the law. The Administration is undermining the Constitution and America’s values of freedom and fairness. And, it is denying Congress and the courts any real oversight.
Winner of the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival, Michael Winterbottom and Mat Whitecross' "The Road to Guantánamo" is the terrifying first-hand account of three British citizens who were held for two years without charges in the American military prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. The Northwest New Jersey Peace Fellowship will present a controversial film, “The Road to Guantánamo” on Friday, January 12, 2007 from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm at the Sparta United Methodist Church (71 Sparta Avenue, Sparta, NJ).
Known as the "Tipton Three," in reference to their hometown in Britain, the three were eventually returned to Britain and released, still having had no formal charges ever made against them at any time during their ordeal. The film has engendered significant controversy due to its critical stance towards the American and British governments.
The organizers hope that people will attend this exciting screening event to be informed, to explore, to ask questions, and to be stirred to learn more about the human rights abuses at Guantánamo and other U.S. run detention facilities and compelled to take action. Sadly, the abuse of power that “The Road to Guantánamo” so vividly portrays is not confined to the U.S. military detention facility. All are invited and welcomed.

December 8 Film Presentation - The Ground Truth --
Hear and witness the lives of our soldiers in this penetrating film.
The shocking ground conflict is only a prelude to even more challenging battles
these reluctant heroes face upon their return home.
The Northwest New Jersey Peace Fellowship will present a poignant film, --The
Ground Truth,-- on Friday, December 8, 2006 from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm at the Sparta
United Methodist Church (71 Sparta Avenue, Sparta, NJ). Patricia Foulkrod produced
and directed THE GROUND TRUTH so viewers could talk openly about what really
happens in war -- the fact that people kill and get killed; the thousands and
thousands who are injured in combat and must now struggle to cope with their
pain and new stressful living conditions -- long after the conflict is out of
the news.
The Director wanted to show how deep the effects of killing in combat truly
are -- whether in self-defense or not -- and create a national dialogue about
our --consciousness of killing.-- I felt it was important for us to witness
the despair returning soldiers experience when their psychological needs are
not recognized or provided for. I wanted us to hear their hearts and troubled
minds, so hopefully we can become more involved in long-term solutions for our
veterans.
The organizers hope that people will attend this exciting screening event to
be informed, to explore, to ask questions, and to engage in thinking about these
critically important world events. All are invited and welcomed. More

February 25 - As a prelude to the March 19th International Day of Protest on the second anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, the Northwest New Jersey Peace Fellowship will present a documentary film "Hijacking Catastrophe - 9/11, Fear & the Selling of American Empire" on Friday, February 25, 2005 from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm at the Sparta United Methodist Church (71 Sparta Avenue, Sparta, NJ). Hijacking Catastrophe examines how a radical fringe of the Republican Party used the trauma of the 9/11 terror attacks to advance a pre-existing agenda to radically transform American foreign policy while rolling back civil liberties and social programs at home. The documentary places the Bush administration's false justifications for war in Iraq within the larger context of a two-decade struggle by neoconservatives to dramatically increase military spending in the wake of the cold war, and to expand American power globally by means of military force.
